Whedon Confirmed for ‘Avengers’ Sequel
Walt Disney Co. chief executive Bob Iger recently announced that Joss Whedon will write and direct a sequel to The Avengers, one of the most successful films of all time.
Iger announced Whedon’s return during conference call with analysts regarding the quarterly earnings. The highly touted director/writer will also return to what he does best: television. The chief executive said Whedon will develop a live-action, Marvel-themed show for ABC.
Marvel Entertainment has not set a date for the sequel to The Avengers, which has raked in more than $1.4 billion in ticket sales worldwide, but it will likely be released in 2015 following Iron Man 3 (to be released May 3, 2013), Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014) and Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014).
With all the stars lined up for a second movie, it was critical for Disney to convince Whedon to write and direct the sequel. The Avengers is Hollywood escapism at its best with witty dialogue and well-directed action. SPOILER ALERT: He introduced the great Thanos to audiences around the world, and it is only fitting that he oversees the development of the villain in the next film. Fans are certainly breathing a sigh of relief with the announcement, as well as pondering what Marvel and ABC have up their sleeves.
