‘The Switch’ Review
There really is not much to say about The Switch. It tries to veer off the tracks of the typical romantic comedy formula by adding a child to the mix, but in the end…it’s just like any other rom-com (Why do people say rom-com? Wait…why did I even type that?!).
There is Wally (played by the awesome and underrated Jason Bateman), a neurotic, pessimistic (or as I like to say, a realist) narcissist who has developed a strong unrequited love for his best friend Kassie (Jennifer Aniston). Kassie lays a bombshell on Wally by telling him that she wants to have a child and is looking for a donor, and it bothers him that she didn’t consider him as a candidate. While attending a “I’m getting pregnant party” (seriously…that’s what it’s called), Wally gets hammered and winds up switching the donor’s sperm (which was in Kassie’s bathroom) with his own. Kassie decides to leave New York to raise the child, but comes back seven years later to introduce her son, Sebastian to Wally. Sebastian’s mannerisms and obsession with looking up diseases on Web MD convinces Wally that he is the father, and he begins to fall in love with the idea of having a family with Kassie and blah blah blah…again, typical romantic comedy.
The Switch isn’t a terrible film, but it could have been better. Bateman’s acting and comedy is the only saving grace to the movie, especially when sharing the screen with Sebastian (played by a charmingly funny Thomas Robinson). It may not be a film to watch on a Friday night at the theater, but it’s deserving of a spot in your Netflix Queue.
