Daredevil to Return to Marvel and Disney
After much speculation regarding the film rights to Daredevil, Joe Carnahan all but confirmed the demise of his yet-to-be-produced reboot via Twitter. The director tweeted to 6,000 fans:Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.
Deadline and Variety reported that 20th Century Fox’s request for an extension to the October 10 deadline was denied. The studio’s failure to start production of Daredevil before the fall deadline will transfer the rights back to Marvel and Disney. It was speculated last week that Disney was willing to give Fox an extension in exchange for the rights to Silver Surfer and Galactus, but Deadline put down those rumors, and reported that the latter studio was unwilling to give up that property and very “lukewarm” about rebooting the story of Matt Murdock. Fox will most likely allow the deadline to pass and focus on its sequel to X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine and a Fantastic 4 reboot, which will Chronicle director Josh Trank behind the camera.
Carnahan, who directed The Grey and The A-Team, also posted the a 99 second sizzle on YouTube, giving fans a small glimpse of the story he envisioned filming. The short piece, which is comprised of footage from other films and 2003′s Daredevil, had a gritty, 1970s crime drama feel to it. Despite his post regarding his idea going up in smoke, Carnahan was quick to tweet that the sizzle was well-received.Guys. To clarify. DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went tits up.
Though it is a shame fans will not see a French Connection-esque Daredevil film, it’s going to be interesting to see what Marvel does with its character. It would be nice to see Carnahan, who was obviously passionate about the character, direct the film with Disney, but that’s a decision for producer Kevin Feige. And after six successful films, it’s safe to assume that Feige won’t let fans down. Here is the sizzle for the Daredevil movie that was not meant to be.Filed under: Movies
