‘Bridesmaids’ Review

Bridesmaids by UNIVERSAL

When the trailer to Bridesmaids was released, guys were already coming up with excuses to not see the film with their significant other: “You should maybe watch it with your friends. Make a night out of it, you know? Have some fun…a girls’ night out kind of thing.” But I’m here to tell the male audience that it’s okay to watch this film, and guys will definitely find plenty of laughs in (so far) the year’s best comedy.

Star and co-writer Kristen Wiig shines as the single and broke Annie Walker, who is happy to be the maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding. But problems arise when Lillian (Maya Rudolph) introduces Annie to bridesmaid Helen (Rose Byrne). The other bridesmaids Becca (Ellie Kemper), Rita (Wendi McLendon-Cover) and Megan (a hilarious performance from Melissa McCarthy) are comedic bystanders in the rivalry between Lillian’s new, rich friend Helen and childhood BFF Annie.

Bridesmaids, much like it’s male counterpart The Hangover, is a raunchy, rowdy comedy that can be enjoyed by all. Director Paul Feig (The Office, Arrested Development) does a fine job in his first effort in providing many laughs layered with plenty of heart, mostly provided by love interest Nathan (played by Irish comedian Chris O’Dowd). Wiig turns in a stellar performance displaying the great range and comedic timing she continually shows on Saturday Night Live. And McCarthy keeps the laughs coming, but Jon Hamm is hilarious as the douchey, no-strings-attached man-whore.

Guys: watching this film will not make you less of a man. You will laugh and definitely score some points with the lady, so go for it. Besides…it may give you some insight as to what women talk about with their girlfriends. Just give in and laugh your butt off.
