Aranofsky to Direct Wolverine 2?!

Acclaimed director Darren Aranofsky (The Wrestler) has accepted to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2, according to Deadline.

The deal between 20th Century Fox and Aranofsky is practically complete, with the two parties currently discussing film locations and production. Filming is to start March 2011. The story, written by Christopher McQuarrie, will focus on the Wolverine’s back-story in Japan, a popular one among fans of the character, which is sure to make them…let’s just say excited. Aranofsky and Jackman previously worked together on The Fountain, which is considered to be the director’s weakest film (I personally liked it).

With DC Comics’ ‘Batman 3‘ and a new ‘Superman‘ starting production soon, it’s about time Marvel up the ante with one of its most popular characters. Though the first film was forgettable and disappointing, it still grossed $373,000,000 worldwide. With Aranofsky in director’s chair and McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) holding the pen, Wolverine 2 is sure to be one of the most anticipated movies of 2011. Wolverine deserves a great film, now can we get a Magneto movie going already?
