If I may quote the modern day poet known as Ice Cube: “Today was a good day.” Indeed it was, for we were finally given glimpses of two summer blockbusters.
The second trailer of Cowboys and Aliens premiered on television during American Idol, and it did not disappoint. The new trailer is very similar to the one released four months ago, but director Jon Favreau gives us a clear visual of the spacecrafts, as well as a high definition shot of Daniel Craig’s abs. We were also teased with the hand of an extraterrestrial. The new clips confirmed (to me) Favreau’s dedication to the project and his vision of creating a western peppered with science fiction, drama and action. The special effects look great, and so does Olivia Wilde. How can you say no to a film with cowboys, whiskey, bar fights, guns, aliens, spaceships and tractor beams?! Cowboys and Aliens hits theaters July 29.
Today also marked our first sneak peak of 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. I am a fan of Planet of the Apes (the original, not the terrible remake by Tim Burton), and very much looked forward to this prequel. This trailer is the equivalent to taking Viagra for fans of the series. The story is solid: James Franco plays a scientist who has developed a cure for Alzheimer’s and begins testing on apes. And of course…there is a side effect: the drug radically boosts the brain, improving the intelligence of the apes. It’s a chilling trailer, but the visuals impress far more than the story, acting or the lovely Freida Pinto. WETA, the team behind Avatar, are using the most advanced CGI on the apes, and it really is remarkable. The apes will be taking over theaters August 5.
