Sony recently announced Rhys Ifans joined the cast of Marc Webb’s Spider-Man as a villain, and TheWrap is reporting that he will be playing Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a the Lizard.
Though it was rumored Sony would bring back Venom for the reboot, sources close to production say the popular villain will not featured in the film, according to TheWrap.
Ifans is good actor whose resume includes Notting Hill and Enduring Love, but I pictured him as the Vulture more so than the Lizard. Dylan Baker played Dr. Connors in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3. Some fans expected Raimi to use the Lizard as a villain in his fourth film, but he picked John Malkovich to play the Vulture before Sony decided to pull the plug on his sequel and opted to reboot the franchise.
Ifans joins a cast that so far includes Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Spider-Man and Emma Stone (Zombieland) as Gwen Stacy, a love interest that rivals Mary Jane. Production on the film is set to begin in December. The film, which will be shot in 3D, is currently slated to be released in theaters on July 3, 2012.
I’m a fan of Spidey, but can the Lizard, alone, hold an entire film? I don’t think so, but why doesn’t Webb (500 Days of Summer) throw in the Sandman to help out? Oh…wait….
